Geology of volcanogenic massive sulphide prospects of the Palmer property, Haines area, southeastern Alaska

Abstract

The Palmer property is underlain by mafic-dominated bimodal volcanic rocks and subordinate tuffaceous limestone and argillite that are constrained to Norian to Rhaetian age (Late Triassic) based on new conodont data. Zircon from a rhyolite flow yielded a U-Pb age of 213 +/- 5 Ma. Rocks have undergone regional greenschist facies metamorphism, most likely at low- to mid-greenschist grade, and at least three phases of deformation, with the earliest and most evident being a north-south contractional deformation event. Three prospect areas - Glacier Creek, Cap and Mount Henry Clay - exhibit gross similarities in stratigraphy, alteration, and mineralization, but the strata at each exhibit distinct chemical compositions and are likely not correlative. Mineralization consists of polymetallic (Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag-Au) stratiform baritic massive sulphide bodies, which are underlain by thick alteration zones consisting of quartz-sericite-pyrite +/- chlorite. Baritic massive sulphide bodies are locally leached of sulphides and underlain by supergene Zn and Cu enrichment zones.*
